How do we manage plant waste?
1. Collection
Plant waste is prioritised to be shredded at the same location where it is generated. Whether from pruning, mowing, or green area maintenance, efforts are made to ensure that shredding can be carried out on-site at the same time, avoiding the transport of unprocessed branches and other low-density materials. Pre-shredding increases material density and improves transport efficiency to treatment sites, resulting in reduced emissions and lower energy consumption.
Where this is not possible, designated collection areas are established where municipalities and individuals can deposit their plant waste. In this way, shredding equipment is transported to these areas, making the process more efficient both environmentally and energetically. From there, the shredded and sorted plant waste (pruning residues, palm waste, leaves, or grass) is transported to the treatment facility.
2. Protocol
At Mallorca Compost i Mulch, we aim to minimise the storage time of plant waste received at our facility to ensure there are no environmental impacts. According to established protocols and “recipes,” different plant materials are blended and incorporated into the composting process using a turned windrow system.
This system allows us to control the porosity and uniformity of the material mix at all times. Having our own turner allows us to control moisture levels, both by efficiently irrigating the entire volume of the pile when needed and by reducing excess moisture caused by events such as heavy rainfall.
Key process parameters are continuously monitored, ensuring full traceability of the final product and enabling the detection, diagnosis, and correction of any issues to prevent them from affecting product quality.
3. Certificates
Once the desired maturity is reached in the final product, it is screened to obtain compost. Representative samples from compost batches produced from different blends are analysed by independent laboratories to obtain a complete understanding of their physicochemical and biological characteristics, ensuring they meet the regulatory requirements to be considered both technically and legally as “compost.”
We are currently in the process of certifying our products in the Fertiliser Products Register of the Ministry of Agriculture.
